How
has 2007 been for you?
"It's
been probably the craziest year of my entire life so far.
So much has happened this year. It's weird, I remember sitting
in the bath on New Year's Eve last year thinking. 'Yeah, there's
a lot coming up this year'. So much has changed. I live in
a different place now, we went to America and toured there,
there's been so much going on. It's been a real rollercoaster."
How
has your personal life been this year?
"I
went through a pretty difficult break-up, which inspired
the album, and things in that sense are back on track now,
but for seven months of this year i was in emotional turmoil.
It was a pretty horrendous time. Which i guess lent itself
to what i was doing in my work. It's so weird, despair seemsto
bring out a much more creative side than if you're happy.
If you're happy with life it's harder to write music."
Who
is your hero of the year?
"Al
Gore. I saw his documentary An Inconvienient Truth and i
was so blown away. Somethings really urge you to get up
and write or inspire you. I saw how passionate he was about
it and i was blown away and really inspired by it. I just
like it when people against the odds will stand up and fight
for something they believe in, and he's a prime example
of that. It really inspired the concept of our whole record.
One Day Son This Will All Be Yours derives from the fact
that whether it is global warming or whatever it is, however
we treat our planet and our society now it's going to have
repercussions in 50 years time."
What's
the funniest thing that's happened to you this year?
"One
of the hardest times I've laughed was when i went to see
Ricky Gervais, that was genious. It's so important to be
able to laugh and forget what's going on in your life."
What
have been this year's In-Jokes?
"Something
that Al [Westaway, Fightstar vocals/guitar] did when we
were in the studio. He drew a vagina and stuck it on my
back without me knowing. I went out, went to the post office,
went to the market, and i was getting these looks from people.
I took my jumper off and i was like, 'You absolute c**ts!'.
It was a good half a day i was walking around with that
on my back."
Have
there been any strange fan encounters?
"No,
they've all been pretty cool. The majority of the touring
has been in America where people don't know who we are.
But we've got these fans who from the start of our career
have literally come to every show we've ever done. They've
spent so much money on coming to see us, whether in Ireland
or Scotland or England or Wales, they've come to every single
show. I know when i look down at the front row they're going
to be there, those five girls. I just thought that was amazing,
the amount of support they give us is so humbling. They
travel so far. It's really cool to see."
What
have you learnt about yourself this year?
"On
a personal level i think i've become a lot more independent.
I think i've learnt if you want to get something done you
have to do it yourself. There's a lot of situations where
you're going to leave things to other people, whether it's
in business or personally, but if you're relying on yourself
you know that if it doesn't happen then it's your own fault."
Did
you get any good freebies this year?
"Yeah,
we got loads of shoes. That's cool. Always love a freebie!
We got an Xbox 360, and Atticus send us free clothes."
What
are your plans for Christmas?
"I'm
going to France with my family. We've got a country house
in France - we're going to go there for a week. I'm just
deciding what to do for New Year. It always seems to be
an anti-climax. Because there's always so much anticipation
that you've got to have a crazy time it never works out
like that. I tend to not like being in London for New Year
because everywhere's so packed. I'd much rather be out in
the country, renting a cottage with a load of friends. But
i'll probably end up in a pub somewhere."
What's
Christmas day like in your house?
"It's
sacred family time, and it will be until i'm married and
so are my brothers. We cherish the time that we have. And
i love Christmas; I love the whole ceremony of it, so it's
really important to me. We get up and we still open our
stockings that our parents put out. You can never be too
old for Christmas and the festivities that go with it. The
my mum cooks the best roast i've ever tasted, and then we
open the main presents in the afternoon. In the evening
we'll just go out to the pub."
What
will you get the rest of the band for Christmas?
"We
usually end up getting each other ridiculous toys, so its
usually stupid shit."
What
are your hopes for 2008?
"We've
got the Kerrang! Tour, which is going to be awesome. My
next real aim is to start exploring the international market
because we haven't really been to Europe, and then writing
and recording next summer."
