David Boreanaz interview

Bare Bones

David Boreanaz is best known as the leading man in Angel, the spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now he's taken on a more adult role in the detective series Bones.

Where you looking to star in another TV show after Angel?

No. But this was too good to pass up.
I felt it was just another step to where I want to go in my career, and a great opportunity
to take on a character who can expand a lot.

Tell us about the part you play.

The character is Special Agent Seeley Booth. He operates from his gut ; he's instinctual and can be a synic. Hes a man's man , a complete icon and a throwback to th 1960's, like Mitchum or McQueen.

Booth works with forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan [Emily Deschanel]
Critics have compared them to Mulder and Scully from The X-Files. Is that fair?

I think Booth and Brennan are a great combination.
It's a little bit of Moonlighting thrown in with a bit of The X-Files. Their
banter and dialogue definitely harks back to Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy
with that speedy kind of give and take and they both tap into their relationships
while they are solving these crimes.
Hopefully they won't get together to quickly !

Like Booth, you've a young son [Jaden, three, with wife Jaime Bergman,
A forger Playboy model]. Are there anyother similarities?

He fights for the common man - I'm from a tough city and I know that struggle
of sticking up for the person who got beat up, of wanting to catch the bad guys, and put
them away so they won't do it again. So that kind of mentality I share with Booth
He's a fighter, someone who roots for the underdog - and I believe in that too.

How do you balance being a father and husband with starring in a TV show?

Jaden is at an age now where he(s going to preschool, so only wears nappies at night - and that's something I don't have to deal with any more! He gives me a lot of moments in my life to cherish. He keeps me straight and focused in this horrible town of Los Angeles as does my wife. You have to have a partner who's understanding and allows you to lose yourself in a role. - Jaime is very accepting of the fact I'm away for long hours.

How do you handle filming the show's more disturbing scenes?

We did a scene recently about a little boy who was murdered. We found his body and I just couldn't look at the [prop] skeleton remains because I have a three-year-old and it was too traumatic to even imagin. I saw a lot of stuff when I was working on Angel that was gruesome but that didn't come from a real place, it was all just special effects and not nearly so upsetting.

The show is set in Washington DC, but do you shoot there?

We have only shot in Los Angeles so far, but thecnically our characters investigate cases worldwide, so I'm hoping it will give us an excuse to go to London for an episode or two.
I love London and have always had a lot of support from fans there, so any excuse to go back would be great.!
