“BONES” TO INTEGRATE VIEWERS IN A MURDER MYSTERY PLOT
FOR EPISODE AIRING WEDNESDAY, MAY 9, ON FOX

Five-Week Campaign Kicks Off Wednesday, April 4,
on Fox.com and MySpace

Viewers Have Chance to Follow Clues to Decipher Who Victim Will Be And Who Committed Fictional Murder

In an unique integration, the FOX series BONES, in conjunction with Fox.com, has created a comprehensive online world that will parallel the characters and storyline of the upcoming episode “The Glowing Bones in the Old Stone House” airing Wednesday, May 9 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Eighteen MySpace (http://www.myspace.com) profiles have been created to mirror the characters in the episode, and the MySpace pages will be live and accessible through Fox.com (http://www.fox.com and http://www.fox.com/bones) beginning Wednesday, April 4 at noon PT. Additional promotional content related to the character profiles and episode storyline will be available on Fox.com.

In the episode, written by BONES executive producer Stephen Nathan and directed by Caleb Deschanel, Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) are called in by Homeland Security to investigate potentially radioactive remains, which are emitting a green glow at the crime scene. Brennan’s team at the Jeffersonian joins her and Booth in pursuing the murder mystery, which leads them to a group of friends who are shocked to discover that one of their own is the victim. During the course of the investigation, the characters’ MySpace pages become a virtual tool for the Jeffersonian team’s search for answers.

In-depth MySpace pages on characters will include personal blogs referencing the episode’s storyline, as well as photos and videos that reveal details about the characters’ relationships and insights into their personalities. These profiles will enable viewers to immerse themselves in the characters’ world and gather clues as to the identities of both the fictional victim and the murderer.

Personal blog postings and ancillary pages will be updated in real time, multiple times per week, throughout the campaign leading up to the episode – enabling viewers to gather new information, clues and hints on a regular basis. Each profile cross-references the others, creating a parallel online version of the episode’s storyline, with characters commenting on each other’s pages, blogs, images and videos.

BONES is from Josephson Entertainment and Far Field Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television. Barry Josephson, Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan are executive producers.

No 'Bones' about it: One of TV's best series

By TED COX
Posted Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Series television ain't easy. The characters have to remain consistent and the story line cohesive from week to week, yet each episode has to be different while playing off the show's unifying themes.

In short, it's its own peculiar art form, and for an idea of how it's done look no further than this week's episode of "Bones" at 7 p.m. Wednesday on WFLD Channel 32.

This is a very fine, very admirable series - nothing flashy, but with an almost effortless sense of grace, which is a rare quality in television (and especially rare on the Fox network). Now midway through its second season, it stars David Boreanaz, a series veteran from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and his own spin-off, "Angel," and Emily Deschanel, a relative newcomer who projects a stunning beauty without even thinking twice about it.

They play FBI agent Seeley Booth and forensics academic Dr. Temperance Brennan, whom Booth has dismissively nicknamed "Bones" for her area of expertise. See, Booth is a gritty G-man, and he has little patience for "squints" - pedantic experts called in to aid with cases. Even so, the two respect each other as colleagues, and they have a tangible sexual chemistry, although thus far they've refused to act on it. What they share is a fondness for their work - and for working together.

This all comes into play in Wednesday's episode, "The Boneless Bride in the River," which finds Brennan on vacation with Eddie McClintock's FBI agent Sullivan, a colleague of Booth's who took a shine to her when he briefly replaced him following a testy case earlier this season. In fact, Booth is still seeing a therapist to deal with the emotional aftermath.

'Brennan gets called in on the case of a woman's body discovered entirely deboned. Yet that gives her an out. "No bones, no Bones," she says. She goes back to vacation on Sully's boat. Yet more evidence is uncovered, and Booth comes knocking while the boat is rocking.

"We got a bone," he says.

"Tell me about it," replies Sully, unamused.

There are a couple of things of note here. First, "Bones" might be about gruesome murder investigations, but it has a much lighter, more playful, less ponderous touch than any of the "CSI" or "Law & Order" series. Boreanaz and Deschanel have a lovely sparring interplay, and they're not the only ones allowed to crack wise. Brennan's colleagues at the Jeffersonian Institute have their comic moments as well. Similarly, Boreanaz makes it plain Booth feels pangs about Brennan's new relationship, but he doesn't go in for any macho posturing. Again, there's a light touch. When he first hears Sully has bought a boat, he tells Brennan, "Next thing you know, he'll be shipwrecked and talking to a volleyball."

Yet, when Sully decides he's leaving the FBI to cruise the Caribbean and invites Brennan to go with him, it's no laughing matter. "There is more to this life than corpses and murder," he tells her. "If you do this too long, you get warped."

While a cynical viewer might dismiss the idea of one of the stars leaving the series, Brennan's co-workers do not. "You have been working every day since I met you," says Michaela Conlin's Angela. "It's time to let another part of you out in the sun." Even Booth - yes, Booth - tells her she should go.

I'm not going to spoil the ending, but I am going to point out that what's interesting - and elegant - about this episode is the way it all comes together. If Booth makes a play for Brennan - and in his own way he does - it's by luring her back to work, again and again, from the more frivolous pleasures to be had with Sully.

The mystery revolves around a Chinese ritual in which the bones of a man and a woman are buried together so that they'll both have companionship in the afterlife. Some might call that a highly unlikely - if not slightly racist - motive for murder, but look at what the show does with it. While Brennan is mulling what to do, she finds herself alone in her lab looking at the two sets of bones as they're laid out side by side on examination tables: the symbol of romantic union in the setting of her workplace.

"Bones" doesn't draw any attention to how clever or even poignant that is. It observes Brennan in the moment and goes on, letting the viewer draw his or her conclusions.

The Italians have a word for something done with effortless ease: "disinvoltura." "Bones" is one of the few TV shows I can think of to display that highly admirable quality. Sometimes, even your Friendly Neighborhood TV Critic has to remind himself that, for all the hype exerted over groundbreaking shows like "The Sopranos" and "The Wire," "South Park" and "The Riches," the subtle pleasures of a well-made TV series are their own reward, make no "Bones" about it.

Both shows picked up for next season

By Michael Schneider http://www.variety.com

Fox is showing some early love for "House" and "Bones," picking up both for next season.

News is no surprise for "House," which will enter its fourth season this fall. Show, which launched to tepid numbers, eventually burst into a mega-Nielsen performer and now is one of Fox's top-rated tentpole dramas.

Season to date, "House" has averaged a strong 7.1 rating/18 share in adults 18-49, as well as 17.4 million viewers. It's Fox's top-rated scripted skein, and No. 3 among all webs with adults 18-49.

Show stars Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House, an acerbic but brilliant infectious disease specialist. Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer, Robert Sean Leonard and Lisa Edelstein also star.

David Shore created and exec produces "House," which earned him an Emmy for writing in a drama in 2005. Katie Jacobs, Paul Attanasio, Bryan Singer and Dan Sackheim also exec produce "House," which comes from NBC Universal TV Studio.

As for "Bones," the drama has averaged a 3.1 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 season to date, as well as 8.8 million viewers.

Show stars Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist who assists in murder investigations. She's frequently teamed with FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (played by David Boreanaz).

You might say Ellen Burstyn has made a habit of appearing in entertainment projects with religious themes. She has just been cast as Mother Superior in the set-in-1972 basketball flick Our Lady of Victory, which starts before the cameras at Immaculata University in two weeks. Burstyn won an Oscar nomination as the mother of the possessed Linda Blair in The Exorcist - pass the pea soup, please - and played a nun who would be a priest in Sacrilege on Broadway. Carla Gugino (Entourage, Karen Sisco) will play Mighty Macs coach Cathy Rush. Producers are talking to David Boreanaz, son of 6ABC's Dave Roberts, for the role of Ed Rush, Cathy's husband. Lots of local actors, including Agnes Irwin grad Lauren Karl, have been cast.
